Marbling has a relaxing effect due to the usage of natural materials such as water, earth dye, branch of rose, a resin that is taken from thorn of wild licorice, buffalo bile*, horse hair*.
Ebru technique consists of sprinkling colours containing a few drops of ox-gall on to the surface of the bath sized with kitre (gum tragacanth) in a trough. By carefully laying the paper over the bath, the floating picture on top of it is readily transferred to the paper; thus, each ebru is a one of a kind print. To obtain beautiful ebru results, one needs to have a light hand, refined taste, and an open mind to the unexpected patterns forming on the water. Patience and a good knowledge of traditional culture are characteristic of ebru masters.
Painting on water has a positive effect because of the freely flowing movement of colors on water.
Movement of water gives positive ions and one feels quite relaxed and peaceful just like watching a beautiful sea or a lake view. Beside the usage of natural materials, Ebru teaches patience and helps developing it. Lack of full control in an ebru making session helps an obsessive person to admit „acceptance of realized things“ and see the beauty, aesthetics of what appears on water.
An Ebru maker can express feelings and thoughts with different patterns and colors instantly.
This creates a new inner vision about himself of herself. When the body concentrates on water and movement of colors, it releases the stress and changes the sense of time.
While making Ebru, it is almost impossible to keep negative thoughts and feelings because of the instant changes of colors and patterns. It also changes bad mood and improves concentration.
For an adult, making Ebru helps remembering his/her childhood with the opportunity of playing with colors and water without any worries of perfection. During the process of Ebru making,
harmonizing feelings, releasing stress and anxiety are more important than creating a masterpiece.
As a designer and artist  who works on meditative effects of Ebru, I tried to show this connection with images from inner world and some photos from nature... Each piece is digitally edited/combined with an Ebru piece.
